49ers Hire Chip Kelly as Head Coach

Owner York announces hire via tweet

The San Francisco 49ers of Santa Clara announced today that they had hired Chip Kelly, the recently fired coach of the Philadelphia Eagles to be their new head coach, replacing Jim Tomsula, with whom they had “parted company” 16 days ago.

The announcement was made by team CEO Jed York in a tweet, despite the fact that York had promised "never" to use social media, and particularly Twitter, to communicate with the 49er (Former) Faithful.

Kelly, who was let go by Philadelphia after less than three years with the team, is an offensive specialist, a capability the 49ers were specifically looking for. He is also known to have had difficult relationships with his players, a contentious history with club management and absolutely no interest in defense, all capabilities the 49ers were not looking for.

With the possible exception of the lack of interest in defense, Kelly’s credentials seemed remarkably similar to Jim Harbaugh who, after taking the 49ers to three NFC championship games and one Super Bowl, was fired after an 8-8 2014 season.

When asked about the Kelly/Harbaugh similarities, York tweeted back, “You will reap what you sow,” going on to say in a tweet, “we are confident Chippy K. will be a valued addition to the #49er family.”

Kelly will not be officially introduced to the media and the public until sometime next week. It is rumored that the delay in scheduling a press conference is being done so that the team can hire professional script writers to prepare remarks for Kelly, York and general manager Trent Baalke, in an attempt to avoid the incoherent babbling displayed when they introduced Tomsula at his hiring press conference last year.
